What Is Vertical Broaching?

Vertical broaching offers distinct advantages compared to horizontal broaching and other types. If you’re considering investing in a broaching machine or need an industrial broaching service provider, here’s what you need to know about vertical broaching. Power Broach can help you get the exact broaching machine you need to keep your business running smoothly.

Vertical Broaching Machines

A vertical broaching machine uses a precision tool to create custom cuts in workpieces at high speeds. Once tooled properly, a vertical broaching machine can mass-produce parts to your exact specifications. Vertical broaching can be used for:

Use your vertical machine to remove material from steel, aluminum, brass

, bronze, or wood workpieces. Depending on the material, you may need to adjust the tooling or increase the frequency of tool sharpening and other maintenance steps.

Due to the intensive use of broaching machines, maintaining broaching tools is crucial to prevent damage and ensure high-quality workpieces. A dull cutting tool can easily damage workpieces, break the tool, or even damage the entire broaching machine. Vertical machines require a consistent maintenance schedule to keep up with high production demands efficiently.

Common Applications for Vertical Broaching

A well-maintained broaching machine can quickly and accurately make cuts in various materials, producing high-quality components for industries such as aerospace, automotive, tool and die, and others. The wide range of industries that successfully use vertical broaching machines is only limited by the type of tooling and material being used.

Working with a premier broaching service provider can provide you with the innovative tooling or completed workpieces needed for specialized industrial requirements. If you’re struggling to meet your workpiece needs in-house, consider outsourcing to a broaching company for affordable bulk orders of custom parts.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Broaching

Understanding the differences between vertical and horizontal broaching is important. Broaching machines can be either horizontal or vertical, and they can also be distinguished as linear or rotary, push or pull, among other types.

  • Vertical Broaching Machines: These use an upright design with a vertical stroke. They have a small footprint, allowing for a long stroke length without occupying much floor space. However, the stroke length can be limited by the facility’s ceiling height.
  • Horizontal Broaching Machines: These are less common and use a horizontal stroke. They require a larger footprint but can have extreme stroke lengths without ceiling height limitations.

Advantages of Precision Broaching Services

The main advantage of a vertical broaching machine is its compact footprint, enabling efficient use of floor space while providing long stroke lengths. Horizontal machines, on the other hand, can offer longer stroke lengths without being constrained by ceiling height.

Both vertical and horizontal broaching machines have their own set of advantages, and the choice between them depends on the specific requirements of the production process and facility constraints. By understanding these differences, you can choose the right broaching machine for your needs or work with a broaching service provider to achieve your production goals efficiently.
